How Does Laser Liposuction Work?

Laser lipo is a noninvasive body-contouring treatment that targets fat cells to slim and shape the body. It works by using low-level laser energy to change the membranes of fat cells, allowing the fatty acids, glycerol, and water inside to be flushed out of the body or burned for fuel.

A laser lipo session is typically about an hour long per area treated, although some patients can do two or three sessions in a single visit to see better results. Before the treatment, you’ll be prepped with a local anesthetic to numb the skin. Then, a technician will position the pads equipped with laser diodes directly on the skin and inundate the targeted areas with laser energy.

You may feel a slight tingling or itching sensation, but that will fade quickly. You’ll likely also feel a little shaky, but that’s normal because your blood is moving faster and your lymphatic system is working harder than usual to eliminate the fat cells.

Some people feel a cold sensation during the procedure, but that usually fades as soon as the numbing agent wears off. You’ll also need to drink lots of water in order to help flush the fat and toxins out of your system.

If you have loose or sagging skin in the treated area, this may cause discoloration or a lumpy appearance. This is typically temporary and will be addressed with a follow-up appointment.

It’s best to avoid blood-thinners, aspirin, and other medications that can thin the blood before a laser liposuction procedure. This will minimize the risk of bruising and swelling.

During the treatment, up to 12 pads with laser diodes are placed on the targeted area and secured in place by elastic straps. The device then sends out the laser energy to target the fat cells in the selected area.

The laser diodes disrupt the cell membranes of fat cells, which causes them to lose their round shape and release their fatty triglycerides. The triglycerides then flow out of the disrupted membranes and into the interstitial space, where the body can use them for energy.

You’ll see the most dramatic results around twelve weeks after your first session, but you can return for a second session every six to eight weeks to keep your results at their maximum level. The number of treatments you need depends on your individual needs and goals, but most people require between six and eight sessions to achieve their desired results.

A consultation with a specialist will provide a tailored plan to meet your unique body goals and determine whether you’re a candidate for a laser lipo treatment. If you are, Sono Bello’s 185+ board-certified surgeons offer this and other laser body-contouring treatments at their offices across the country.
